Williams at it again

Well, Ricky Williams failed his last drug test, and wont be able to get reinstated to the NFL until September. I don't know whether to think he's an idiot for throwing away his talent and thinking he wont get caught...or feel sorry for him. From the article:

"Falling off the wagon is part of rehab," a source said. "Based on the medical evidence in Ricky's case, the doctors say it's too early to come back. He had the positive test last month. Remember, he's been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder -- that's a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction."
If it is a problem with his mental illness and an addiction that is out of his control, then maybe the media should pay some more attention to this. The NFL is known for only taking from it's players, and rarely giving back in times of need. Maybe if stories like this become public, then the NFL will be forced to take better care of its athletes, and everyone benefits.

I don't even begin to feel sorry for Ricky Williams. The NFL cannot babysit its players (and banned players); they are grown men and they have to have responsibility. They must choose to surround themselves with the right people. If they have an addiction, it is their responsibility to get a sponsor, and take the steps seriously. Sure, the NFL can provide sponsors or run the 12 step programs, but ultimately if a player is going to do it, it is up to him.

Ricky Williams obviously loves marijuana more than he loves the game of football, and there is just no excuse for failing a drug test when you are trying to get back into the league. If you want it bad enough, your will should be enough. Fact is that most of these players cannot think more than 10 minutes in the future. Take Pacman Jones for example. On the way to go to his 'appeal' hearing with Roger Goodell, he chose to take a load off by going to a strip club. He was tailed obviously, and going to a strip club isn't illegal, but he is not surrounding himself with the right people and his actions speak louder than his words. (i.e. 'Mark my words, things are going to change.')

Mike Vick is another example. What can the NFL do? EVERY DAMN YEAR we hear that things are going to change for Michael Vick. He looks in the camera, says he is tired of being a kid, tired of the people around him, that he is going to separate himself from the people that lead him down bad roads, etc. But every year the same old shit goes down. This whole dog fighting thing at his Virginia house just pissed me off. I have never liked him, but this is just ridiculous. 70 malnourished dogs? A rape stand? His face plastered all over a pit bull kennel's website? Maybe he should have hid the house keys in his water bottle's hidden compartment. Fuckin idiot.

The NFL uses their players, but they are paid very handsomely. Through the years, they are known for not taking care of the retired AND sweeping lots of shit under the rug.

That is what this is. I do NOT see the NFL stepping up in some holier-than-thou position and helping Ricky get over his anxiety issues with counseling and what not. Instead, they will ban him and cast him aside.

There will be another running back who will run for 1800 yards. Every single season there will be another. That seems to be the NFL way.
