Franchise

I just read an article that had four different opinions on players to choose in order to build a franchise. If you only had one player you could choose to build a team around, who would it be?

I think everyone who reads this blog knows exactly what I'm going to say:

Peyton Manning. He is the quintessential franchise quarterback. He gives you everything you want from the position and offers a different type of leadership that can't be taught.

I invite everyone to post their opinions, but be wary Alge Crumpler lovers, you will be ridiculed for tomfoolery.

As much as I hate to say it, I would go with Peyton as well. He is just too smart, too talented, and too much of the leader in the locker room, you couldn't pass him up.

Craig and I were talking the other night about how he confuses defenses at the line with his fake audibles and such, you don't get that with Brady. If the Colts had even a Pats type defense, if the Colts had a consistent run game, then they would be just as unstoppable as the Pats, because Manning overcomes his team's horrid run defense.

It would be Manning, and I'm upset about that.

Caveat - If I were to choose a player to be the franchise player for the Steelers, it would not be Manning. It would be someone like Urlacher or Peppers, someone that would lead the defense. And if I could choose any player ever to be the franchise for my team, it would be Joe Greene. IMO the best defensice tackle EVER.

One of the dudes that posted on the actual article I read said that Shawn Merriman would be his franchise anchor, so your nod to defense is valid (regardless of what a Yahoo tool says anyway), but I don't agree with Merriman. I'd much rather go with Urlacher or Ray Lewis four years ago.

I would have to say position wise I would take either a quarterback or running back first, depending on the type of offense I wanted to build. But, you would be silly not to want to build your team around Peyton Manning. He gives you everything you want right away, and he makes the rest of the guys on the offense better.

The only other player in the league I would consider is Tomlinson. But in the end I would still lean towards Manning 99% of the time.

There is no doubt that Manning would be best pick for a franchise player/role model, whatever you want to call the player. He can lead a team to victory, and he is a very humble person. That right is key to be a person that a team wants to look to as a franchise player. If he is able to admit to his own faults that is a plus.

As for any other player now, you can go with Tom Brady. The All American boy, or in a year or two Reggie Bush depending on how his performance goes on field, and If he stay out of trouble.
